About This Opportunity
The Technical Business Analyst will undertake business analysis activities to identify, define and convert ecosystem science data users’ requirements into system requirements within the TERN Data Services and Analytics platform at the University of Queensland. The role works closely with the TERN stakeholders and TERN domain capabilities located across Australia.
TERN is an Australian Government research infrastructure initiative to enhance Australia’s environmental research effort, particularly in the area of changes over time in ecosystems. TERN coordinates a national grid of field observation, sensors and remote sensing, which collectively provide open access data for researchers and other users in Australia and globally. TERN was established in 2009 by a National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) grant from the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) and receives co-investment from state governments and partner institutions.
TERN’s head office is at the Long Pocket precinct of the University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane and it partners with many other universities across Australia and CSIRO in delivering its research infrastructure project.
Key responsibilities will include:
  • Undertake analysis of business processes, investigate operational requirements, problems, opportunities and identify innovative solutions.
  • Create, analyse, and validate detailed functional, non-functional, system and user-interface specifications.
  • Translate business and user requirements into system specifications in accordance with agreed standards.
  • Identify, develop, document validate and endorse the requirements for project Epics and Features.
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary team to write requirements and user stories.
  • Develop test strategy, test plan and test scenarios for QA of proposed solutions.
  • Proactive participation in agile project management processes.
About You
We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated Business Analyst interested in making a difference to Australia's environmental monitoring capabilities. The successful candidate will undertake business analysis activities to identify, define and convert ecosystem science data users’ requirements into system requirements for TERN's Data Services and Analytics platform.
  • Tertiary qualifications in IT, Business, or related discipline together with previous experiences in IT business/ systems analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering services in an agile development environment and a demonstrated understanding of agile principles.
  • Demonstrated competency in the use of professional business analysis tools and techniques (such as User Requirements models, Use Case Analysis, UML, business domain models, functional and non-functional specification).
  • Demonstrated experience applying user-centred techniques and knowledge of artefacts (such as Journey Maps, user stories, storyboards, personas).
  • Demonstrated understanding of software development lifecycles, their associated artefacts and how different approaches are needed in different scenarios.
  • Demonstrated understanding of current programming and cloud technologies such as Python, JavaScript, PHP, OpenStack and AWS coupled with good knowledge in data and information modelling.
  • Basic understanding of principles of Data Science (data preparation, data on-boarding, business intelligence, visualisation)
What We Can Offer
This is a full-time, fixed-term position through to June 2026 at HEW Level 7.
The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $93,254 - $101,680 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $109,107 - $118,966 per annum.
